Is “Unlimited” Web Hosting A Scam?
Thursday, July 1st, 2010Many people ask me if unlimited web hosting is a scam. Put quit simply. Yes.
There is not a web host on the planet that has a limitless supply of server space or bandwidth. So when you see an offer like this…run!
It has become very popular these days for web hosting companies to offer this type of plan, but is it honest?
The problem seems to be, if and when you use too much space the web host drops you as a client. They bank on the fact that most folks don’t actually need a lot of space, so offer an outrageous deal they can never live up to.
If your needs grow to fast however, they will dump you as soon as you consume too many resources. At some point in time they have to terminate your account because the truth is, your service really isn’t “unlimited” is it?
Further more, spammers frequently join ”unlimited” plans and temporarily bog down the resources for as long as they can get away with it before the host dumps them, so even if you don’t use a lot of resources you still suffer with slow service everytime this happens.
“Overselling” is another popular trick, in which the web host sells the same space over and over again.
If you fall pray to this kind of hosting practice you will also soon find your server slow and unresponsive and sooner or later you will be forced to move your site somewhere else, possibly even losing your Domain Name in the process.
A good web host will never offer “unlimited service” or “oversell” their servers and will set sensible limits which in turn gives everyone positive space and bandwidth that you can count on. You can check out some great plans at Expert Online Hosting
